Comparatives (İkilikıyaslama)
İki şeyi karşılaştırırken, sıfatın “comparative” (karşılaştırmalı) hali kullanılır. Bu, çoğu sıfata “daha” anlamı katan “–er” ekleyerek oluşturulur: |
| Small (küçük) — smaller (daha küçük) |
| Fast (hızlı) — faster (daha hızlı) |
| Cheap (ucuz) — cheaper (daha ucuz) |
| Tall (uzun) — taller (daha uzun) |

| Ancak, bazı sıfatlara “–er” eklerken, dikkat edilmesi gereken noktalar ortaya çıkar: |
| Sıfat, ünlü harf + ünsüz harf ile bitiyorsa, sondaki ünsüz harfi tekrarladıktan sonra “daha” anlamı katan “–er” eklenir: |
| big—bigger, hot—hotter |
| Sıfat “y” harfi ile bitiyorsa, “i” harfine dönüştürüldükten sonra “-er” eklenir: |

Superlatives (En Az 3’lü Kıyaslama)

| Aşağıdaki cümleleri inceleyelim;Tom is taller than Mary. Tom is more handsome than David. |
| Bu cümlelere bakınca, cümlelerin “comparative” yani iki kişi arasında geçen bir kıyaslama olduğunu görebiliriz.David is the shortest one of all. Mary is the most successful student of all.Ancak yukarıdaki cümlelere baktığımızda cümle başındaki öznenin cümle sonunda direkt bir muhatabı yoktur. David’i bir grup içinde kıyaslarken “en uzun olan kişi” anlamı ve “Mary en başarılı kişidir “anlamı “superlative” yapısıyla verilebilir. |
| Bu en üstün olanı ifade etmek için sıfatın “superlative” hali kullanılır. Bu, çoğu sıfata “en” anlamı katan”–est” eki ekleyerek oluşturulur:Small — the smallest (en küçük) Fast — the fastest (en hızlı) Cheap — the cheapest (en ucuz) Tall — the tallest (en uzun) |
